There are sooooooooo many. Depends on how scholarly you want to get, and which parts of the world you want to dive into. And I geek out pretty hard on this too, so get ready for the over-share!

Beyond the books on magick and amulets below - I also recommend both of Maggie Anton’s novels about Rav Hisda’s daughter. They are impeccably researched and really “get” the practice and bring it to life.

The best book on Jewish Amulets is Angels and Demons: Jewish Magic Through the Ages. It’s not the easiest to get, but because it was attached to a museum exhibit – if you google it – you’ll find at least some excerpts.

The second one I would recommend is Ritual Medical Lore of Sephardic Women: Sweetening the Spirits, Healing the Sick. It’s got a really wide range of amulets that also include herb bundles and such. But it’s a sociological study, so it’s a solid read. Slog through the beginning, and it totally pays off.

Worship for Chthonic Deities

Chthonic (or chthonian) deities are are Gods that dwell beneath the earth. This includes any Underworld deities, as well as deities that are associated with the Underworld (Gods like Hecate would be included, since They often visit the Underworld). Some of you may have noticed that there’s hardly any information on how to worship certain chthonic deities. Here, I give you some starting tips:

With most chthonic deities, offerings are usually poured down instead of sent up. This means incense is a less common offering, as you want to offer things that are poured down into the earth, where They symbolically reside. I usually offer oils (often olive oils) and teas. Other offerings may include wine, juice, blood and essential oils. I pour the physical remains into the earth after ritual–just make sure you’re not harming any nature when you’re doing this!

I know that in some pantheons, it’s common to take a sip of a drink before offering it to a heavenly deity. With chthonic deities, don’t take a sip before you offer it. It’s traditional to offer the entire drink to Them. (I got such a death glare from Hades when I didn’t do this correctly pun intended).

If you God is associated with the dead, cleaning up cemeteries and tending to old graves are GREAT versions of philanthropic worship!

Stones are often used with chthonic deities, in spells aided by Them and on Their altar. Check your deity’s symbols for appropriate stones, but in general, any dark, jagged stone works best (such as obsidian and smoky quartz).

You may make an altar to chthonic deities easily. Black, grey, metallic, and purple candles are common (depending on your God). Stones, money, any bones (or representations of bones) you have, and items passed down in your family (a form of ancestral worship) also work well on the altar!

You may create an altar to spirits of the dead or your ancestors too if you wish!

Remember that the element of earth is sacred to most chthonic deities as well. Using dirt, herbs and any other earth elemental magic works in devotion to Them.

Although spirit work is common with chthonic deities, it is not required. Again, spirit work is not required. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it, don’t.

If you do pursue spirit work, treat them kindly but remember that some spirits do lie. Pendulums, tarot, astral projection, and offerings work well as beginning spirit work.

If you don’t feel comfortable using your blood in magic, don’t. It is not required.

You do not have to be a certain type to witch, or even a witch, to worship a chthonic deity.

Do not forget to study up on your God! Learn their stories, associations, powers, and traditions. All chthonic deities are different!

And finally, but most importantly, talk to Them. Talk to Them silently, out loud in front of an altar, or write to Them in a journal (which I do all the time). They are Gods, so They will listen to you, and respond when They think best.

Meditate your ass off

What is meditation basically? Lots of people will tell you that meditation is supposed to calm your mind.

But what will really meditation do to you is that you’ll be able to CONTROL your mind. Or at least you’ll be better at it, which is something huge, believe me. And controlled mind is a big tool in magic work.

There are 3 basic types of meditation.

1. Just observe your mind. This is something that you can do when you have time. Sit on your couch, lie on your bed - whatever feels good for you - that’s the key. Close your eyes and just try to observe what’s your mind up to. The important thing is - don’t try to think. Just let your mind exist. It almost feels like falling asleep, actually. Once you try it you can feel how freeing that moment is.

2. Be aware. Yes, awareness of your body and later, of what is happening around you. For example, try to be aware of your breathing. Focus on how you breathe. Just feel how your nostrils feel the air coming in and out. Tap on your forehead with your finger and feel the spot. Be aware of the sensation. Focus on it like nothing else exist. Just the sensation you feel on your skin.

3. Focus on one thing and one thing only with your mind. As I always say, start with something easy like an orange. Orange is easy to imagine in your mind. Picture its structure. Picture its taste on your tongue. Picture how it feels when you touch it. Basically, put together a picture of everything you know about the orange and keep mind picturing it. Feel the orange for as long as possible. If you lose your concentration, it’s alright and you did nothing wrong - we’re humans, not robots. Just try again :)

Questions you may ask:

Q: What if I don’t have time for meditation? I’m busy with school and work!

A: Well, of course we live in a world that needs our presence. And number 2 and 3 can be done while you wait for the bus, while you’re stuck in traffic jam, and so on. Don’t lose hope, just because you’re busy :)

Q: Is it really necessary to meditate?

A: Nothing is necessary, it’s your choice. But the truth is, if you choose to meditate, you’ll be able to control your mind better and it’s not only helpful in magic work. It can help you if you have trouble sleeping and so on. Helps with anxiety, too, btw.

Q: How does meditation help control mind?

A: Number 1 can teach you:

- how to be aware of what’s going on in your mind on the level you can’t reach yet. Later, you can use this new entry to your mind and analyze your psyche better.

- how to not fall asleep when you try astral traveling before going to bed.

- lucid dreaming :)

Number 2 can teach you:

- how to be aware of what your body wants and needs even though it can’t speak.

- how to be aware of what is happening around you in a crowd - kind of good skill to have these days, sadly.

- how to feel if something paranormal is happening around you.

Number 3 can teach you:

- how to use your willpower as a tool for your magic work.

- power of good imagination raises IQ and plain common sense.

Remember that if something isn’t going well for the first time you try, it doesn’t mean it’ll be like this forever. Things can better with practice. So don’t worry. We were all lame shits when we started.

Litha: A Midsummer Night

Litha, also referred to as Midsummer, occurs at the summer solstice generally around the dates of June 21st and the 22nd. This day marks the longest day of the year where the sun reigns at its peak strength. From here, the power of the sun and therefore the God, begin to wane until his death according to the Wheel of the Year. The Goddess, on the other hand, is full and pregnant with child, her strength building before the harvest of the Earth. With this climax of the strength of the sun, the God as the Oak King is defeated by the Holly King as the world begins to descend into darkness with the last half of the year.

Many people choose to awake before dawn to greet the sun upon this day while lavish and expensive celebrations last until sundown. In ancient times, the Solstice was held to a high esteem where people led torchlight processions and rolled flaming wheels down hillsides. Large bonfires were lit in order to symbolically strengthen the power of the sun. Fire was the chosen element of Midsummer, rightfully so based on the importance of the sun at this time. This element represents transformation and can be attributed to the transformation that occurs at Litha of the Sun God to the Sacrificing God and the Maiden Goddess to her Mother aspect.

The use of fire in the ritual bonfires was very similar to how they were used at Beltane. Farmers would take torches and carry them around their herds or drive their herds between bonfires to prevent disease. People would dance around the bonfires or leap through them as a purification and strengthening process. The wood of choice for these fires was the mighty oak for its strength, will, and steadfastness. It was also symbolic of the defeat of the Oak King by the Holly King for the throne for the latter half of the year. It was said that traditionally, depending on how many bonfires you can see from the hills on this night, you can use these sights for divining events for the future.

Around this point of the year, crops are reaching their full stage of maturity. Wild herbs are also in full bloom as well making it a great time to take out your boline and gather herbs for magickal and medicinal uses. My personal favorite is wild mountain mint! Other traditions include lighting a candle for the entire day of midsummer and performing rituals and spells that are charged by the power of the sun. The best time to conduct these spells and blessings would be at noon at the peak of the sun. Many witches like to create amulets and charms for protection and abundance at this time to be charged for the latter half of the year. This would also be a great time for a witch to conduct the ceremony of Drawing Down the Sun.

Couples at this time are encouraged to renew their vows to each other. Those who were handfasted at Beltane and have endured the trial of a year and a day may wish to make their handfasting permanent. It’s a great time to build relationships and to solidify their status.

Midsummer is also popularly known as a night where the faeries dance. Many engage in faery magick and provide offerings of milk and honey as friendly gestures of acknowledgement and to garner friendship. However, not all these faeries are considered benign. It is encouraged that before trying to engage with faeries that one do substantial research before this attempt. Some faeries are more malevolent and can be easily offended by the mere fact of trying to view them without their permission. One should use caution when trying to establish a relationship with faeries. Even Tinkerbell tried to kill Wendy.

Midsummer Protection Charm:

What you’ll need:

One Cinnamon Stick

Rosemary Sprig

Basil Sprig

Mugwort Sprig

Gold Ribbon

What to do:

All materials should be present. You may cast a full ritual circle if so desired or a simple salt circle. This charm may be created and charged on the day of Midsummer or created prior and then charged on the day of Midsummer. Take the cinnamon stick and place the rosemary, basil, and mugwort with it. Take as much ribbon as you need (at least a foot in length) and wrap it around the herbs in a spiral pattern to bind the herbs together. As you wrap the ribbon around the charm, you may want to meditate on your desired intent of protection and/or prosperity or you may want to create a chant that resonates with you and your desired goal.

What the herbs represent:

Cinnamon: An herb strongly associated with the sun and masculine properties represents energy, willpower, success, money, prosperity, action, healing, protection, and purification.

Basil: This herb strives on sunlight and shares a close connection to the sun. It represents protection, success, abundance, prosperity, happiness, and love.

Mugwort: Associated with the Fae, this herb represents protection, divination, relaxation, and consecration.

Rosemary: This herb is very versatile and represents many properties such as protection, healing, wisdom, and health.

Decorations: Honey, Summer Flowers, Herbs, Oak Bark, Candles, Ivy

what is the strawberry moon?

🌛 called also the “rose moon” by some (it is interesting to note, strawberries and roses are in the same plant family). it is the full moon of june. the name of the moon references the transition of spring into summer, as roses and strawberries bloom, and in general the start of plants bearing fruit.

what does that mean for witchcraft?

🍓 as it’s the beginning of summer, symbolic ingredients such as roses and strawberries becoming available, which are key ingredients in love and friendship magic.

🌛 this is around the midpoint of the year, and the full moon nearest the summer solstice, also known as midsummer night. this is a good time for rituals preparing for the rest of the year, instigating changes and reassessment.

this is coming up june 27th 2018!

so i backed the marigold tarot on kickstarter and when it came earlier this month my first thought was “IT’S SO PRETTY…..” followed by “WHY TF DIDN’T I PAY AN EXTRA FEW DOLLARS FOR GILDED EDGES……” because let’s face it, some metallic gold on the edges of these cards would have been A++++

so because i can’t go back in time and make it so that i ordered a gilded deck, i thought i’d do a hack-job diy! on that note: if you do get this deck and want gilded edges i HIGHLY suggest just spending the few extra dollars for it, while this doesn’t look bad it definitely isn’t as pretty as getting it professionally gilded and frankly amrit brar deserves it

i also did an old copy of “nine stories” by salinger with this method too! it will work for any kind of book or paper, not just tarot decks :)

supplies

gold ink or gold acrylic paint (i found the ink works best on dark paper and the acrylic was better on light paper but definitely mess around with an old sketchbook or something else you don’t mind experimenting on, not all brands will behave the same) the brand i used for both options is liquitex, it’s preeeeetty cheap so
a brush and some water to wash it later
the post-it note served as my place to Put the paint lmao
the Thing to Gild (in this case, my shiny new tarot deck)
at least two binder clips, 4-8 is ideal though

first: clip the thing

this is just to keep things as stable as possible while working! for thicker books you can just sandwich it between heavy books and paint the edge as it hangs over the table, or in this case because tarot cards aren’t bound i split it into sections that could easily be clamped by my binder clips and did it that way

second: LIGHTLY brush a layer of the paint or ink into the edge

key word is lightly because you will get some seepage otherwise, and it will make the cards/pages stick together pretty badly! these pictures are after one coat. rotate the binder clips around the edges as you work your way around!

and…that’s basically it! rinse and repeat if you want the gold to be a little more intense, just gently separate the cards/fan the pages in between coats to prevent sticking!

like i said before: i have no idea if this will wear down over time (it probably will a bit but from what i’ve seen around online it won’t be too bad hopefully) but it’ll do for now!

you can also do whatever color/finish you want, though if it’s not metallic i’d probably stick to acrylic over ink - less watery and less room for seepage, in my opinion.

(and let’s be real: gold edges on literally any book make it 10000% more fancy and pretty, i might do this to my grimoire in silver??? we’ll see)

🌅 Waking Up 🌅
Do some Yoga poses for 2 minutes.
Brush your teeth counter-clockwise to banish negativity from your day.
Stir your Coffee/Tea in a clockwise motion to invoke positivity to you and your day.
On your way to work, whisper a silent greeting to the sun. Enjoy its warm rays on your commute.
If you’re willing, try to pack or purchase a healthy snack like fruit and veggie bowls.
🌤️Afternoon🌤️
Ditch the soda! Try rejuvenating yourself with water instead, maybe add some lemon, cucumbers, or even fruits to your water to detoxify your body.
Meditate for 2 minutes, but don’t forget to eat and energize your body again.
Carry crystals with healing and or corresponding energies pertaining to your work, school or plans for that day.
🌕Evening🌑
When cooking/ cleaning, take a moment to play some of your favorite music to invoke spiritual energy.
Take a few minutes to google something you’ like to know! Crystals? Candle colors? Moon phases? Research and learn something new!
Mediate! Even if it’s for another 2 minutes. Anything counts! Clear your mind and relax.
Whisper a “Goodnight” to the moon, enjoy its glow for a few seconds.

this is a list of magical associations for every tarot card, they can be added into spells to amplify your intentions and strengthen your manifestations

Wands are connected with the Fire element and is centered around movement, direction, energy, passion

Swords deal with thinking, communication, perception, and issues dealing with truth, connected to the air element

Cups are connected with water, and the full spectrum of emotions. every emotion imaginable is covered in the cup’s suit.

Ooh dear gods, the planetary hour chart.

There *is* some stuff that you see about each hour being ruled by the planets, and each planet dominates certain aspects. So, for instance, Venus rules matters of love and relationships and all that sappy stuff, right? So, doing a love spell would be best done on an hour that is ruled by Venus. It wouldn’t necessarily be specific to sunrise or sunset though - throughout the week cycle each hour is basically different and ruled by a different planet.

In astrological theory, not only the days of the week, but the hours of the day are dominated by the seven luminaries. If the first hour of a day is dominated by Saturn ( ♄ ), then the second hour is dominated by Jupiter ( ♃ ), the third by Mars ( ♂ ), and so on with the Sun ( ☉ ), Venus ( ♀ ), Mercury ( ☿ ), and the moon ( ☽ ), so that the sequence of planets repeats every seven hours. Therefore, the twenty-fifth hour, which is the first hour of the following day, is dominated by the Sun; the forty-ninth hour, which is the first hour of the next day, by the Moon. I don’t know the sources of either of those images, as in where they got that information from, but it seems solid enough to me? Use at your discretion, I guess - practice and experiment and see how legit those are.

Also, [Time of Day for Spellcrafting], which says morning is good for awakening, new beginnings, fertility, and life direction; twilight is the time to perform spells for change, receptiveness, parenting, and moving between the worlds; and evening (which is somehow different from twilight?) is best for spells for camaraderie, spirituality, joy, pleasure, family gatherings, and children.
